Africa Liberation Day
We just celebrated Africa Day and throughout the day, all I could think about was the meaning behind Africa Day. The formal name for recognizing this day is, African Liberation Day. On this day, many African countries celebrate the hard-fought achievement of their freedom from European colonial powers. Colonization and the fight for freedom is a very heavy and multi-tiered topic to unpack so we won't do that today! What we must remember non the less, is that the opportunity to live together as a human race did not come without a painful price marked with bloodshed, pain and loss.
In the same way that we challenge ourselves, I would like to challenge you as well to think deeply about your responsibility to the world around you. See, my grandparents never acquired a formal education and lived under oppressive British rule for most of their years. However, in a changing world, they sacrificed their hard earned money, mind you, in a colonial economy, so that their children would acquire an education because they recognized that education was an opportunity....to pave way for a different reality for Africans.... Our parents took that baton and ran with it, ultimately passing on those lessons of hard work, perseverance and sacrifice. We ask ourselves daily, what our responsibility is as the current generation? What do we owe future generations? What do you owe your children, grandchildren and future great grandchildren?
Something to ponder.....
